Şekerbank Açıkekran in Contemporary Istanbul with Görkem Ergün

20.11.2014

Şekerbank Açıkekran New Media Arts Gallery meets the art lovers at Contemporary Istanbul, the most comprehensive contemporary art event of Turkey on November 13-16. Ali Akay is the curator of the exhibition installation of Açıkekran that will participate in this year's Contemporary Istanbul with Görkem Ergün’s video installation at the booth no. IKM 801.

Within the scope of Contemporary Istanbul, which brings the most important domestic and foreign institutions, galleries and initiatives of the contemporary art, Açıkekran will this time introduce Görkem Ergün, one of the young representatives of the current art, to the art-lovers. Ergün will meet the exhibition-goers with its video work called “The Hidden Subject”.

“The Hidden Subject” places the female subject dating back to the beginning of the century into an area such as 'memory, recollection and fear'. Although many objects of the past have left their marks on memory, even the most familial-appearing thing starts to alienate. The body and the movement, which stands almost like a sculpture of horror make references to Freud’s essay “The Uncanny” of 1919. The artist shows us the creepy and dark side of this uncanny image making only a single movement, and uses the pictorialness and movement features of the video art.

The only new-media-and-video-focused art platform of Turkey, Açıkekran New Media Arts Gallery brings the contemporary art to Anatolia through special monitors in Şekerbank's 9 branches in 8 cities simultaneously with its gallery in Teşvikiye-Istanbul.
