EKOkredi helped save 144 million cubic-meters of natural gas

Providing 15.8 billion kilowatt-hour energy saving with 144 million cubic-meters of natural gas thanks to the insulation of approximately 79 thousand houses with EKOkredi, Şekerbank published the sustainability report which includes the remarks of international financial organizations such as International Finance Corporation (IFC), Dutch Development Bank (FMO). The report, which explains in numbers the human and local development oriented banking understanding of Şekerbank that summarizes its mission as Community banking, has been approved by Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) on GRI A level which is given to the most extensive reports in this field.

Şekerbank published the Sustainability Report 2013 named "Generating The Future" which has managed to be awarded with Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) A level. The report summarizes the activities of bank which focus on supporting production and saving in line with the Community Banking mission which has been an important value since the foundation of the bank. The sustainability report of Şekerbank, which has become the first bank awarded with corporate management rating in Turkey, includes the remarks of the directors of cooperator international organizations about the strategy of the bank.

Introduced 59 thousand people with energy efficiency...

Şekerbank, which aims to contribute to economy and the sustainability of natural resources in our country importing the 72% of its total energy need, have introduced 59 thousand people with energy efficiency by supplying more than 558 million TL with EKOkredi. Thanks to the energy efficiency investments made with EKOkredi, 15.8 billion kilowatt-hour energy has been saved and totally 3.5 million tons of CO2 emission has been prevented thus far. Besides, within the scope of EKOkredi that has allowed to insulate almost 79 thousand houses, 144 million cubic-meters of natural gas has been saved.

Dr. Hasan Basri Göktan: "Our target is proliferation of awareness on saving"

Making a statement with regard to the Sustainability Report of Şekerbank, Dr. Hasan Basri Göktan, Executive Chairman of Şekerbank, indicated that they have obtained 15% of the liabilities in their balance sheet to finance the investments in energy efficiency and continued as follows: 

"International finance organizations follow our activities which are taken to finance sustainable development. For EKOkredi, we provided more than 245 million TL fund from numerous energy efficiency oriented international fund and finance organizations such as Green for Growth Fund, Southeast Europe (GGF), Dutch Development Bank (FMO). Using this fund, we continue to support thousands of investments in energy efficiency in appropriate conditions from transition to modern irrigation system in agriculture to oven insulation, from transition to waste water treatment systems in workshops to transition to solar power systems in small-scale hotels. We desire to contribute to the economy of our country by ensuring the proliferation of the awareness on saving".

GRI A Certificate

Şekerbank Sustainability Report 2013 was prepared in accordance with GRI A level on the basis of GRI Financial Services Sector Supplement (FSSS) and G3.1 Sustainability Reporting Guidelines of Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) which is a globally esteemed organization. In addition to materiality, stakeholder engagement, sustainability context and integrity principles of GRI, we based on AA1000 Accountability Shareholder Engagement Standard during the shareholder prioritization process. In order to determine strategic sustainability issues we took into consideration the Sustainability Issues Report for Sectors published by GRI 2013 and Sustainability Performance Standards of International Finance Corporation (IFC) and prepared the report in a way that it covers 10 basic principles of UN Global Principles Compact.
